Winner of the 2017 City of Busselton Art Award Revealed

Dont Ask, Imagine by Michael Vincent MurphyDont Ask, Imagine by Michael Vincent MurphyCongratulations Michael Vincent Murphy - winner City of Busselton Art Award 2017!  Don't Ask, Imagine now belongs to the City of Busselton art collection, and Michael will have a show at ArtGeo Gallery in 2018.

Artist Statement:

"If words were scattered at random on a table, anybody asked to make sense of them would, more than likely, make up sentences or paragraphs. The next person asked would do the same but their sentences or paragraphs would probably be completely different in meaning from the first person, and so on.

The title of the painting invites each viewer to use their imagination as to the meaning of the work.

I find it fascinating to think that there will probably be as many meanings as there are viewers. "

Michaels work was chosen from the 140 entries by Kim Jamison, executive director of ART ON THE MOVE  and artist, Monique Tippett.

Kim kindly wrote us a few words on the judging process.

"...WHEN ASKED TO TAKE ON THE ROLE AS A JUDGE FOR ANY ART EXHIBITION THE FIRST THOUGHT IS HOW HONOURED YOU FEEL TO BE ASKED. THEN YOU REALISE THE RESPONSIBILITY YOU HAVE COMMITTED YOURSELF TO.

OFTEN THE ASSERTION IS THAT CHOOSING AN ARTWORK IS BASED ON YOUR OWN SUBJECTIVE VIEWPOINT. WHILST THERE IS TRUTH IN THIS I ALSO CONCUR WITH TED SNELL’S (WINTHROP PROFESSOR, DIRECTOR CULTURAL PRECINCT, UNIVERSITY OF WA) VIEW THAT RATHER THAN BEING A MATTER OF PERSONAL OPINION WE BRING OUR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO THE PROCESS OF EVALUATION AND THE RESULTING AGREEMENT OF BEING PART OF A JUDGING TEAM UNDERSCORES A LEVEL OF OBJECTIVITY IN THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS.

TO THIS END WE CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING WHEN REVIEWING EACH ARTWORK:

  • • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE IDEAS, ISSUES, AND/OR OBJECTIVES AS CREATIVE RESEARCH IN THE VISUAL ARTS.
  • • TECHNICAL AND CREATIVE SKILLS REPRESENTED WITHIN EACH ARTWORK.
  • • RELEVANCE OF THE ARTWORK TO CONTEMPORARY ART AND VISUAL CULTURE.
  • • ARTISTS’ ABSTRACT AND ITS ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE THE CONCEPTS AND ARTISTIC CONTENT.

WE WERE REALLY PLEASED WITH THE STANDARD AND QUALITY OF ALL THE WORK WE VIEWED AND DELIGHTED TO SEE DIGITAL ARTWORKS BEING INCLUDED IN THE AWARD. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE ARTISTS WHO ARE REPRESENTED IN THIS EXHIBITION, YOUR WORK REALLY SPOKE TO US IN MULTIPLE WAYS FROM CHALLENGING OUR VIEW OF THE WORLD TO CREATING ENGAGING PATHWAYS INTO YOUR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AND STYLE.

WHEN IDENTIFYING THE AWARDS OF EACH CATEGORY WE DID NOT, INITIALLY, AGREE ON WHO WOULD RECEIVE THE ACQUISITION AND EMERGING ARTIST AWARD. THROUGH A PROCESS OF REFINING OUR CRITERIA WE WERE ABLE TO FIND AN OUTCOME THAT WE WERE BOTH COMFORTABLE WITH. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AWARDING ARTISTS. TO THOSE WHO RECEIVED A HIGHLY COMMENDED - YOU MADE OUR JOB AS JUDGES A LOT HARDER WHICH IS HOW IT SHOULD BE AND WE WELCOMED THE CHALLENGE.

ARTISTS HAVE SUCH A GIFT, THEY CAN SPEAK TO US ABOUT OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD, CHALLENGE OUR VIEWPOINT OR MAKE US SEE SOMETHING IN A NEW WAY. THEY CAN MESMERISE US WITH THE BRILLIANCE OF A TECHNIQUE OR THE WAY IN WHICH A MOMENT IS CAPTURED…AND SO MUCH MORE. TO THAT END I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD – WHAT SPEAKS TO THIS COMMUNITY. AND HOW IS THAT REPRESENTED FOR THEM…?

IT WAS A GREAT HONOUR AND PRIVILEGE TO BE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EXHIBITION. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY AND MY WISH IS THAT VISITORS TO THE GALLERY GAIN AS MUCH FROM THE EXHIBITION AND INDIVIDUAL ARTWORKS AS MONIQUE AND I DID."
