The joint winners of the City of Busselton Art Award 2019, print maker Elmari Steyn and sculptor Peter Zappa, are presenting an exhibition entitled Double Act.

Namibian born Elmari Steyn is continuing her love of the arts as an active printmaker, focussing on copper plate etching. Her works reflect her love of nature and wilderness, especially the relationship of individuals within nature, and the experience of transition and sense of place. Elmari’s intricately collaged etchings present fragments of stories, beliefs and every-day happenings amongst a small band of people; told through depicting the trees, boats, houses, lands and countries they lived in and travelled through.

“I translate drawing directly into sculpture. Instead of moving a pencil across a page, I use metal to draw within space. This allows the potential energy constrained within static two-dimensions to be set free in three dimensions." Peter Zappa

Peter Zappa has been working as a professional sculptor since 2006 when he completed a degree in Fine arts at Curtin University at the age of 48 as a mature aged student. He commenced an Honours program in sculpture in 2007 but left academia to pursue his passion as a practicing artist, preferring the creative atmosphere of his workshop in preference to an institution. Perhaps it was the 25 years working with his hands as a plumber that drew Peter towards sculpture or maybe it started as a boy watching, entranced as his father, Guglielmo (also known as Bill to his friends), magically worked metal with a hammer, fire and anvil in the garage on the rare occasions when his chisels needed re-sharpening. Peter is represented by the Mossenson Galleries, Perth.
