Our Artists in Residence program will provide local artists with the space and time to experiment and develop their practice. The Stables Studios are accessible to the public and allow members of the public to view artists at work. 

We have created an exciting opportunity for artists working in any medium or field, looking for a small space to create a new body of work.  Four artists per year working in their chosen field will be given the opportunity to use Stable 3 in the historic Courthouse Complex, Busselton for a 3 month period for free of charge.

Stables 3 is a light airy studio (3.5 x 4.3m) in courtyard of the Courthouse Complex 4-6 Queen Street, Busselton) in the heart of Busselton’s cultural precinct. 

What does it include?

  • A subsidised studio space. Stable 3 is a glass fronted studio space that is equipped with reverse cycle air conditioning, and water making it a comfortable all year round studio space.

  • Good natural light as well as fluorescent lights
  • Not acoustically treated, thus noise generating artistic processes are not suitable
  • Tiled floor
  • 24 hour access
  • Non residential
  • A community and network of artists and arts workers
  • Opportunities to connect with artistic and local communities through public programs

Conditions of Residence

The Old Courthouse Complex is one of Busselton’s prime tourist destinations.  As such occupants will be expected to welcome tourists and residents into the complex and generally promote themselves and the complex. 

Also in exchange for free studio space (valued at $15 per hour), the artist will be expected to run a free workshop to the public in the Fodder Room and donate one artwork from their current body of work  the City to be added to the City of Busselton Art Collection. 

Please note sales are not permitted from the studio.  All sales must go through the retail space in the Old Courthouse and a commission of 10% is payable. 

Artists should be working toward a new body of work.
